The Maternity Style Struggle Is Real — How I Finally Found Maternity Clothes That Still Felt Like Me and Fit My NYC Aesthetic

No one really prepares you for the identity shift that can come with getting dressed while pregnant. Your body is changing quickly, your closet suddenly feels foreign, and the question becomes: Who am I style-wise right now?

For me, the biggest challenge wasn’t finding casual clothes — it was finding maternity pieces that felt stylish enough for the office without sacrificing my personal aesthetic.

Let me explain.

Most of what I came across fell into two extremes. On one side, there was an endless sea of leggings and loungewear. Comfortable? Sure. Office appropriate? Not exactly. On the other side were crop tops proudly showcasing a bare bump — adorable for some, but definitely not the look I’m going for in a professional setting. Then there were the dresses. So many dresses. Normally I love a chic dress moment, but let’s be realistic — it’s the dead of winter in NYC. The idea of braving freezing temperatures in maternity tights just wasn’t appealing.

I found myself scrolling through Nordstrom hoping for that “aha” piece… but honestly, much of what I saw just didn’t align with my style. I gravitate toward a clean, polished, very NYC aesthetic — structured, minimal, elevated basics. A lot of the options felt overly casual or simply not like me. In a last-ditch effort, I even went to Bloomingdale’s in Westchester and asked if they had a maternity section. The associates looked at me like I had two heads. Apparently, maternity floors are becoming a thing of the past — which, if you ask me, feels wildly out of touch considering how many women still need professional clothing during pregnancy.

Another factor? I didn’t want to spend a fortune on clothes I’d realistically wear for one season. Investing in timeless pieces is one thing — investing heavily in temporary sizing is another. At first, I tried to outsmart the system by sizing up in my go-to sweatshirts from Alo and Anine Bing. It worked for a while. Oversized silhouettes can carry you through those early months beautifully. But as my bump continued to grow, even my clever sizing strategy started to fall short.

I needed a real solution. Enter: TikTok — the modern-day search engine.

After what can only be described as a deep scroll session, I stumbled upon H&M’s maternity line… and I have to say, I’m genuinely impressed. The pieces are comfortable without looking sloppy, stylish without trying too hard, and — maybe best of all — decently priced. It finally felt like I found clothing designed for pregnant women who still want to look put together. Think elevated basics, easy layering pieces, tailored knits, and simple silhouettes that don’t scream “maternity.” Exactly what I had been searching for. At this point, I’d say the majority of my maternity wardrobe is from H&M.

I did try a few pieces from GAP, but if I’m being honest, they made me feel a little frumpy — and when your body is changing daily, the last thing you want is clothing that doesn’t help you feel confident.

Because here’s the thing: pregnancy already asks you to surrender a lot of control. Getting dressed shouldn’t feel like another battle.

What I’ve learned through this process is that maternity style doesn’t have to mean abandoning your aesthetic. You can still feel like yourself — it just might take more digging than expected. If you’re currently in the trenches of maternity shopping, consider this your reminder: don’t settle for clothes that don’t reflect who you are. Comfort matters, but so does confidence. And sometimes, the solution isn’t where you expect it to be.

For me, it was hiding in an H&M tab all along. Below is what I’ve bought so far.
